Our Whanau Tree

Hi Parents

I am so impressed with your response to our Whanau Tree, the children did an amazing job creating the tree and gluing on the money. But the biggest thanks go to Lorraine, she has been responsible for the idea and following it through.

Christchurch is in all our thoughts, but where we start is the biggest problem. We are a small centre and have chosen to help another small centre in Christchurch. I know the owner Sue, I have been in regular email contact since the earthquake. Sue and her husband and son live next-door to their centre, the floor of their house was covered with liquefaction, the centre was reasonably intact, but the playground is also covered in liquefaction. They couldn’t live in their house, but Sue’s husband has been forced to return as they have found looters going through the house. Teachers are helping look after children in their own homes, some teachers have been forced to leave Christchurch. As yet they have to have Ministry of Education consent to reopen and presumably the Health Department, but there is so much uncertainty surrounding this at the moment.

As you can imagine, Sue was overwhelmed by our Whanau Tree, to think that another small centre could care enough to do this. I wasn’t going to mention it until we had finished it, but it did help to lift her spirits and she couldn’t wait to share this with her teachers. We hope they can maybe have a fish and chip night, or buy some resources, or in fact anything they like with the money.

Amazingly enough, there have been no reports of children at early childhood centres being hurt, all those earthquake drills must pay off.

Thank you again for your generosity, we will try and finish it tomorrow and will let you know the total raised. I will match the total raised by the families.
